Why Have Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment can save an infected tooth from extraction, and promotes a healthy and fully functioning mouth. It removes a source of infection that could spread to other areas, and ultimately relieves your pain and toothache.
Missing teeth can cause problems for your tooth alignment and function. Root canal treatment prevents this, enabling you to keep your natural tooth, a preferable outcome. It also avoids the time and costs involved with replacing a lost tooth.
Your Quick Guide to Root Canal Treatment
- We take an X-ray to check the root canals of your tooth and accurately plan your treatment
- Using local anaesthetic to minimise any discomfort, we carefully remove the infected pulp
- We clean and shape the root canals before flushing them with an antibacterial solution to remove lasting debris
- We seal the canals with a rubber compound material and add a permanent filling or crown to restore full shape and function.

When is Root Canal Treatment Needed?
The dental pulp within your tooth is made up of soft tissue, including nerves and blood vessels, and extends from the crown to the tips of the root. If the pulp becomes infected, due to decay, trauma, or a deep filling, it needs to be removed to avoid the issue spreading and to save your natural tooth. You may experience symptoms including pain, sensitivity, discolouration, swelling, a metallic taste or gum tenderness.

Frequently Asked Questions
The best way to look after your tooth following endodontic treatment is to keep up with excellent daily brushing and flossing. Root filled teeth are still prone to decay, so need to be cared for properly to maintain your oral health. As far as possible, avoid chewing or biting on the tooth being treated until you have it permanently restored with either a filling or a crown.
