What is Gum Disease (Periodontitis)?
Periodontitis is a very common inflammatory condition that damages the gums and bone supporting your teeth. The early signs often include sore, bleeding gums, gum recession, and drifting teeth. If left untreated, it ultimately leads to loose teeth, as the supporting bone is destroyed. Periodontitis is the leading cause of tooth loss worldwide.
Periodontitis is caused by a build-up of bacteria and plaque on your teeth, with factors such as smoking, family history, diabetes and stress increasing your risk. Careful diagnostic assessment and treatment from a periodontist can halt the progress of the condition, with initial treatment followed by regular reviews and home care advice.
